The Shola Sky Islands, based on our own research and several others scientists proved to host a disproportionate amount of endemism and biodiversity that were continuously being discovered. These areas were also soon becoming significant areas for conservation.
In order to highlight this, Prasenjeet Yadav, now a National Geographic photographer, collaborated with VV Robin to create a photo story on the Shola. Prasen procured a National Geographic Young Explorer grant for this project. Prasen wandered the Shola habitats for about two years to get wonderful images highlighting the evolution and the conservation challenges in this landscape. Some of these, including his spectacular green meteor photo are below. |
Below is a story on the evolution of species in the landscape has been featured on the National Geographic website.
Shola Conservation Video
Prasen produced a wonderful video on the conservation challenges in the Shola Sky Islands. This video features Tanya Balcar, who along with Bob Stewart had pioneered grassland restoration efforts in the Shola habitat, having worked on restoration for over 20 years. Bob and Tanya won several awards for their contributions to conservation in this landscape. Tanya tragically passed away in 2016 and the video is dedicated to her memory

Robin and Prasen also collaborated with another National Geographic Explorer, Ben Mirin to conduct a road show with beatbox tunes of Shola birds. This is highlighted in the Sky Island Beat Box page.
