Project: Long Term Ecological Observatories for Climate Change (LTEO)
Description: Human-caused climate change is now recognised as an indisputable fact. India may face major threats because of the projected changes in climate, both because of the large proportion of the population that is at risk as well as the lack of fine-scaled information on which to base mitigation and adaptation measures. To address some of these data deficiencies, the Ministry of Environment and Forests (MoEFCC), Government of India, has set up the Long Term Ecological Observatories for Climate Change (LTEO) and is being implemented through the Centre for Ecological Sciences (CES), Indian Institute of Science as a nodal agency. The full project is divided into various themes, and IISER Tirupati is part of the study of birds in India. The project is sanctioned for five years (until February 2025). This project will be carried out by a consortium of seven institutions that include i) Nature Conservation Foundation (NCF), ii) Salim Ali Centre for Ornithology and Natural History (SACON), iii) Indian Institute of Science Education and Research (IISER) Tirupati, iv) Centre for Ecological Sciences (CES), Indian Institute of Science, v) Indian Institute of Science Education and Research (IISER) Pune, vi) Indian Institute of Forest Management (IIFM), vii) Wildlife Institute of India (WII). Our lab in IISER Tirupati is just one of the 30-odd institutions from across the country that has been supported by this overall 45-crore mega-project of MoEFCC.
